Course Overview
In this workshop series designed specifically for workers who have been promoted to Assistant Site Director or Manager, and who are emerging in the field of youth development-- participants will explore the essential tools required for success as a manager in after-school environments.
Over six weeks in a series of two hour-long interactive workshops, participants will discuss the principles of effective team management and how to assist as supervisors in school and site-based programs. Among the topics, participants will explore: enhancing positive relationships with young people and colleagues, how to set up the management of classrooms for observations, how to best prepare themselves and staff for activity-delivery, and which strategies work best for providing feedback and support for supervisees.
Participants also will share best practices for engaging young adults as youth workers in educational, recreational, and social-emotional learning environments, and practice strategies that are meaningful and action-oriented including: examining the principles of youth development, communication skills and workplace readiness, and -- how to build themselves as role models for the success of others.
Course Goals
- Course participants will determine best practices to support and encourage children’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical development in youth centers, and how to best promote activity-based learning.
- Course participants will also be able to outline the core components of management professionals in the field of youth development, and demonstrate their own preparedness for the workplace using ethical principles and professional guidelines as outlined by agencies and SAC-regulations.
- Course participants will examine the requirements for the development of a workplace environment that encourages connectedness, collaboration, communication and amongst colleagues, supervisors and parents.
- Course participants will share with colleagues and supervisees the procedures outlined by applicable regulatory agencies and be prepared to take precautions in order to protect children’s health while creating safe learning environments. Course participants will explore how to deliver these regulations with confidence and efficacy.
